Home Care Instruction – After Periodontal (Gum) Surgery

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOLLOWED CAREFULLY AS THEY MAY PREVENT NEEDLESS ALARM OR WORRY, AS WELL AS POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS.

THE AREA SHOULD NOT BE DISTURBED FOR 1 WEEK

Local Anesthetic

The local anesthetics can last between 1 and 12 hours. The anesthetic typically leaves your lips, teeth, and tongue feeling numb, tingly, or heavy after the appointment. For this reason, be careful and to not bite your lip or tongue and do not play with them because they feel funny. Biting you lip, cheek, or tongue can lead to some severe discomfort and it may last for days.

Oral Sedation

If oral sedation was used, you are required to rest at home for the next 18 to 24 hours from the time the administration. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL OR USE TYLENOL #3 for the first 24 hours. If Tylenol #3 was prescribed then use 2 tablets Tylenol Regular every 4 to 6 hours for the initial 18 to 24 hours.

Pain

You have been given a local anesthetic that may last up to 12 hours. It is important to begin pain medication when you first eat after surgery. This will allow the pain medication to build up in your body. Do not wait for the local anesthetic to wear off before taking pain medication.

Swelling and Bruising

Slight swelling is considered to be normal. Swelling usually starts to go down after 2 or 3 days. After surgery, you can help reduce swelling by applying an ice bag or cold, moist cloth for 15 minutes on then 15 minutes off of every awakened hour. After 2 days, use heat compresses or moist heating pad to reduce swelling.

Oozing of blood

This is common for the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery. In order to stop it, fold 1 or 2 pieces of gauze thick enough over the extraction site to bite on and apply pressure for 60 minutes. Repeat every 45-60 minutes until the bleeding subsides. If you run out of gauze, use a warm moist tea bag instead

Sutures

If sutures placed, do not play with them or pull on them. You are to return to the clinic for their removal in 1 week.

No Strenuous Activities

Limit yourself to calm activities (NO heavy lifting, going to the gym, running around, etc.) for the first 3 to 4 days after surgery, this keeps your blood pressure lower, reduces bleeding, and helps the healing process.

Diet

DO NOT EAT ON THE SIDE OF SURGERY. Drink lots of fluids. Avoid very hot or spicy foods, warm or cold foods are good. Eat soft nutritious foods (soup, pudding, baked potatoes, Jell-O, scrambled eggs) and avoid sharp/hard foods (ex. popcorn / chips). A good appetite and a well balanced diet are essential to rapid healing. You may eat normally after 4 or 5 days or as soon as you feel comfortable.

Drinking

Do not drink out of a straw (no suction).

Oral Hygiene

Brush on all sides except on side of surgery. Use Peridex and Q-Tip to “brush” the side of the surgery.

Rinsing

Gently rinse with Peridex after ALL meals and snacks for the next 4 weeks.

NO Smoking

Smoking causes poor healing and increase risk of implant failure. Avoid smoking for at least 2 weeks prior to and 4-8 weeks after surgery.

NO Alcohol

Avoid drinking for 1 week.

NO Spitting

Placing pressure in the mouth will cause the area to start bleeding again. Lean over the sink and let the saliva drip out or swallow it.

Medication

You have been given a set of medications and should be taken as prescribed. However, if you break out in hives, itchy skin, or trouble breathing, immediately stop taking the medications and call the office at 905-876-2747.

Wearing your Prosthesis

Partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures should not be used immediately after surgery and for at least 10 days. This was discussed in the pre-operative consultation.

If you have any questions about these instructions or any difficulty (swelling, rapid rise in temperature, persistent pain, or difficulty breathing), please call Oasis Dental at 905-876-2747 or 905-87 OASIS.
