Simple Exercises To Help Relieve TMJ Pain

TMJ Disorder (aka, TMD, TMJ syndrome) is something that is not easy to diagnose or treat.  This can be very frustrating for someone who is suffering from TMJ Disorder (TMD).  It can be very painful and many think it will never go away. One reason why it is so hard to treat is because each person who has it is different and it can be caused by other problems that the person may be having.

What To Do

If you are looking for relief the first thing that needs to be done is to find the cause of your symptoms and then you can find the management and treatment solutions that will work best for you.  For example many times the pain can come from the muscles and it can be manage with a dental orthotic (night guard / NTI).  Others may benefit more by completing a few simple exercises.

 

Exercises For TMJ

There are several exercises for TMJ that are simple and do not take long to complete.  However you should not expect to receive overnight results.  These are not a miracle cure.  When you decide to complete the simple and routine exercises for TMJ these are the best ones you should complete:

  • Work directly on the muscles within the jaw. You should work on strengthening them and loosen them up.  When you jaw muscles are healthy it will guide the jaw into the position it should be in and not another way.
  • Another strong muscle in your mouth is your tongue. For this reason many people have tension build up in the tongue.  It is important that the tension in the tongue be released. There are many different tongue exercises that can be done.  When the tongue is relaxed the other muscles within the jaw will also be relaxed.
  • The throat also needs to be strengthened. For this reason you should complete simple throat exercises as well.  The throat has many muscles that are hidden and if these muscles are stiff your throat will suffer.
  • When you think of your jaw you typically will not think of your neck and shoulder muscles being connected. What people do not know is that all of these muscles are all connected to your jaw muscle.  When they tighten up so does your jaw.

Doing these exercises ten minutes a day everyday you will find that you will get the best results.  TMJ exercises are not a magic solution or a cure and some of the exercises will work for one person and not another.  You are basically giving your muscles in your jaw and connected with your jaw a work out and getting them to be stronger can and will take time.
