DENTAL CLEANING &
PERIODONTAL GUM DISEASE
WHAT IS GINGIVITIS & PERIODONTAL (GUM) DISEASE?
Gingivitis is the infection of the gums only and is reversible. It is caused by calculus (hard bacteria buildup - aka tartar) and plaque (soft bacteria buildup).
Periodontal Gum Disease (aka. Periodontitis) is the infection of the gums, surrounding tooth structure, and bone causing bone loss around the tooth. If caught early, periodontal gum disease destruction of the bone is reversible, however if left untreated it can cause loose teeth, gum infection and tooth loss.
Calculus and plaque will cause gum inflammation (gingivitis) and if left untreated bone loss, loose teeth, and tooth loss (periodontal gum disease)
HOW IS GINGIVITIS AND PERIODONTAL GUM DISEASE TREATED?
Gingivitis is the infection of the gums. Gingivitis treatment is completed with a dental cleaning (hand scaling or ultrasonic).

If caught early, periodontal gum disease destruction of the bone is reversible, however if left untreated it can cause loose teeth, gum infection and tooth loss.

Periodontal Gum Disease (aka. Periodontitis) causes bone destruction around the tooth and gum recession. Periodontitis treatment is completed with a deep cleaning (scaling & root planning) to remove the disease. Periodontal gum surgery may be required if the infection is too deep under the gums.
WHAT IS A DEEP CLEANING?
A deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planning, is a procedure to help manage periodontal diseases which is the infection of the jaw bone and gum tissue surrounding the teeth.

It allows for the removal of calculus and plaque that is adhered to the tooth and root surfaces.

The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth the root surface allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth.

Dr. Soordhar may also recommend antibiotics or antimicrobial irrigation via mouth rinses or other chemical agents to control bacterial growth.

Treatment may require placement of antibiotic fibers in the periodontal pockets after scaling and planing to control infection while encouraging normal healing.
WHAT CAUSES GINGIVITIS & PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Gum (periodontal) diseases will affect 75% of adults over the age of 35 and at some point in their life that can cause tooth loss, loose teeth, bad breath, and even affect your health.

Periodontal disease can be prevented and treated with consistent removal of disease and decay-causing bacterial plaque through proper daily tooth brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings.

Periodontal disease is the infection of the bone, ligament, and gum tissue surrounding the teeth.

Gum infections that would gradually destroy your teeth’s natural support structures can lead to numerous diseases and even affect your health.

The toxins that plaque bacteria produce cause the gums to get swollen, and bleed easily. Pockets can form as prolonged irritation separates gums from the teeth. The supporting gum tissue that normally holds teeth in place can deteriorate as periodontal diseases progress, leading to eventual tooth loss.
